CYCLING: WEARING YOUR HELMET CORRECTLY

Have you ever had a close call when you’re cycling?  You never know when there will be an unexpected obstacle on the road or trail. You might be the safest cyclist but still have an accident. Hopefully you’re wearing a helmet.  If so, are you wearing it properly so it will protect your head?  Follow the instructions that come from the manufacturer of your particular helmet.  Here are some general tips to make sure you are wearing it correctly so it will protect you if you come into a situation where it’s needed.

The helmet should fit level on the head and low on your forehead:

The straps should be adjusted to form a V right under your ears:

Adjust the strap tension so it is snug yet comfortable.  You should feel the chin strap pull firmly against your chin as you open your mouth:

Check to make sure it’s secure.  Attempt to pull the helmet off.  If your helmet moves to the front more than ½ inch, increase the rear strap tension.  With the chin tightly fastened, the helmet should not be able to be rolled backwards, forwards or side to side more than approximately ½ inch.

When cycling you never know when you’re going to need your helmet, so make sure you’re wearing it correctly.  Have fun cycling and be safe!
